Rabbi's new book offers wisdom of the Batman Erin Elliot Community News Editor June 8, 2007In the introduction to his book, Wisdom from the Batcave: How to Live a Super, Heroic Life, Rabbi Cary A. Friedman admits, "As a child, my love of the Batman bordered on obsessive." Now, Friedman has taken what he's learned from the comic book superhero and packaged it for the rest of us. His book uses the Batman example to teach profound truths and is ideal for any Bat-fan, young or old. It's also a great gift for Father's Day. The book is comprised of 18 chapters that illustrate fundamental life lessons: relationships with self and others; how to triumph over adversity; the value of willpower and hard work; the price of greatness; and, of course, the most effective way to fight evil. The chapters are short and full of samples from the comic book stories. Friedman adds simple thoughts and quotes throughout the narrative, such as the African proverb, "Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors," and includes brief examples of people who exemplify the wisdom of the Batman. He also offers suggestions on how his readers can live their own super, heroic life. The book also includes a subtle, but detectable, flavor of Judaism, as would be expected from an author who is also a rabbi. " Wisdom effectively articulates fundamental Jewish values without coming off as preachy or threatening," Friedman said in a press release. "At the same time, although the Jewish content is certainly there, the message of Wisdom from the Batcave is universal and not limited to Jews." * * * * * * * * * * Thank you, Erin!
