Being A Better Person…By Way Of The Batcave!
Apr 13, 2007
You can be a better person…and dare I say, maybe even a superhero-type person! And you can do so without patrolling the night dressed as a flying rodent! Leave the leather and spandex at home and dive into the self-help book that is like no other - author Cary A. Friedman’s Wisdom From The Batcave: How To Live A Super, Heroic Life!
For most of my comic-book-reading life one of my favorite characters has always been Batman. From childhood to my (according to the wife) too-old-to-still-be-buying-and-reading-comic-books age, Batman has always stood out from the rest of the superhero set for me. In a world of super powered, mutated, irradiated-spider bit, gamma bomb-powered superheroes, Batman has always been a different breed.
When you stop and think about it, what is Batman other than a normal man living an extraordinary life? Bruce Wayne has no super powers, no mutant powers, no super solider serums running through his bloodstream. Bruce is just a normal man who decided to use the tools he had to make a difference in his life and in the lives of those around him.
After watching his parents die in Crime Alley, a young Bruce Wayne dedicated his life to not only avenging his parents, but to also making sure that such crimes didn’t happen to others. Honing his mind and his body over the years, Bruce became one of the most intelligent crime fighters to ever stare evil in the face. And he did this without super powers, mutations or any of the other aforementioned flukes of nature and fiction.
So if a normal human being like Bruce Wayne can become an extraordinary character like Batman, then why can’t you or I? Well, thanks to author Cary A. Friedman now we can!
Friedman himself is an interesting if not heroic character. Friedman is a rabbi in New Jersey who also just happens to be a consultant to the FBI! Oh, and it goes without saying that Friedman is a tremendous fan of Batman and Batman comic books.
When a copy of Wisdom From The Batcave: How To Live A Super, Heroic Life first landed on my desk, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. You see, I have this unnatural loathing for self-help books. I don’t buy them, and I certainly don’t read them. But Wisdom From The Batcave is different…it’s kind of the anti-self-help self help book.
Now, don’t let the fact that a rabbi wrote this book lead you to believe that this is a heavy handed religious read. While there are a few insightful pieces of religious text scattered throughout the book, Friedman never gets preachy. I’m not Jewish, and whether you are religious or not, this text only serves to drive home Friedman’s important point -- that we too can aspire to a greater, higher meaning in our lives…and we can actually attain it.
Wisdom From The Batcave is an easy flowing, intelligent read with an underlying smart sense of humor that allows the reader to take the subject matter seriously while still keeping a smile on your face. Friedman covers everything from Batman’s moral standards to his need for a close knit circle of friends -- all things that are or at least should be important ingredients in everyone’s lives.
On a more personal note, Wisdom From The Batcave landed on my desk at just the right time. God works in mysterious ways, you know?! Showing up during one of the darker periods of my life, Wisdom From The Batcave helped pull me from that darkness by showing me that there is a better way…and it all starts with me…not someone or something else. And I was able to claw my way back into the light without having to face down The Joker…although it was an army of Two Faces who put me in that darkness to begin with!
Aside from the actual wisdom, Wisdom From The Batcave proudly sports an impressive who’s who of comic book bigwigs who have read and been impressed by this book -- names like Chuck Dixon, Dennis O’Neil, Mark Waid, Ed Brubaker, Joe Kubert, Mike Baron, Neal Adams and many more! Even more impressive is Friedman’s astute observations of Batman. This is a man who clearly knows Batman and Bruce Wayne better than many writers who have chronicled the Dark Knight’s many adventures. If DC is looking -- and even if they are not, they should consider giving Friedman an ongoing gig as writer on one of the Bat-books!
A short book clocking in at a mere 95 pages, Wisdom From The Batcave is a quick read that will leave you wanting more. Friedman has obviously done tons of research and spent years looking at Batman in a different light. The end result will both inspire you and motivate you to instantly improve your life…or at least grab a cape and cowl and head out into the night to make the world a better, safer place!
I cannot recommend this book enough for Comic Fanatics and even non-comic readers. This is one you can always reach for whenever you are down or if you’ve just momentarily lost your way. An instant pick-me-up. For more information about Wisdom From The Batcave: How To Live A Super, Heroic Life or to order your own copy of this amazing book, visit batwisdom.com!
