JOURNEY INTO COMICS: ... STUFFING YOUR STOCKING
by Michael San Giacomo
...
STOCKING STUFFERS
And speaking of books that made their way to my desk, a couple unusual ones came out this week that would make perfect stocking stuffers for that comic fan in your life.
Wisdom From The Batcave (Compass Books, $13.95) by Cary A. Friedman and The Spider-Man Handbook (Quirk/Marvel Press, $15.95) by Seth Grahame-Smith offer some real life advice culled from the comics. While the Batcave book is serious, the Spider-Man book is pretty funny stuff.
...
The Batman book subtitled, “How to Live a Super, Heroic Life†is more serious philosophy along the lines of “everything I needed to know I read in Batman comics.†One glaring omission is the bat-signal which clearly was meant to be inside the spotlight on the cover and throughout the book. It appears Friedman couldn’t get the okay to use the logo and went with a spotlight of white and blue light instead. Shame.
Friedman was able to get a ton of famous comic folks to write endorsements for the book, including Mark Waid, Neal Adams, Joe Kubert, Ed Brubaker, Dennis O’Neil and Steve Englehart. He wrote the book while a chaplain at Duke University and later as a lecturer at the FBI Academy.
At 95 pages, it’s a slim book. Friedman has gone through hundreds of Batman comics and come away with messages and bits of philosophy which can be used in real life. As Robin explains in the chapter on the value of willpower, “(Batman) is not the biggest, or strongest or the fastest, but he always wins because he never quits.â€
The book is illustrated with grayscale panels from the comics.
When you forget what Batman is all about it, check out this book to see what he stands for.
