Comics Buyers Guide #1627 [April 2007], page 81 Reviewed by Jack Abramowitz
A rabbi, chaplain, and (believe it or not) consultant to the FBI, Friedman has written a book using Batman as an example of how readers can lead a “super, heroic life.†Apparently, The Caped Crusader has been Friedman’s lifelong role model, and here he shares the lessons he has learned.
Among the lessons Friedman has learned are to: work hard, inspire others, appreciate family and friends, and say no more than is necessary.
The chapters are illustrated with Batman art from a variety of eras, ranging from Golden Age comics to modern-day cartoons. Additionally, a number of professionals, who know Batman as well as anyone, chime in with praise for Friedman’s message.
Wisdom from the Batcave is more spiritual than religious. Friedman does illustrate his points with sidebars that occasionally cite great rabbis, but examples are also drawn from the worlds of history, education, and business.
If you’ve ever looked for a thought-provoking way to express to others the values that even adults can gain from comics, Wisdom from the Batcave is just what the doctor ordered.
