I was interested to see in the extended version of Batman Begins, the segment on Keysi self defence, which as I see it, is and extension of Jeet Kune Do, which is an extension of Wing Chun. Good to see the Bat using his kung fu skills. Can't wait for a good Keysi how-to video to surface. -VB

Hi, VB --
Impressive analysis.
What style(s) do you study?
"Can't wait for a good Keysi how-to video to surface.": I'm sure it's out there, though. There seems to be some shadowy underworld in which these instructional videos circulate. My Gung Fu teachers are always finding amazing stuff in the most unexpected places [-- actually, it seems to find them], but it's never "out there" for the public to find. Good luck in your search!

Hung Gar and Bartitsu (now). The latter, I'm convinced, Batman has in common with Sherlock Holmes.

Hi, VB --
"Hung Gar and Bartitsu.": Very cool! I've seen demonstrations of the former -- I was very intrigued.
You study them for long? Are you good? In what way do you use them?
"The latter, I'm convinced, Batman has in common with Sherlock Holmes.": I remember the reference to "baritsu" [sic] in the SH story. Against Moriarty, right?
Re: SH and the Batman: They have a few other things in common, too.
I enjoy your comments.

Hung Gar for three years, about half way to my black sash. I'm the founder of the international Bartitsu forum on Yahoo. Black belt in Jiu-jitsu, other belts in many asian styles. Also studied bata, bare-knuckle boxing, fencing, etc.

"Hung Gar for three years, about half way to my black sash. Black belt in Jiu-jitsu, other belts in many asian styles. Also studied bata, bare-knuckle boxing, fencing, etc.": Wow. Tell me more about your involvement. In what contexts have you studied all these? Do you use any of this professionally? I have a particular fondness for and fascination with jiu-jitsu.
"I'm the founder of the international Bartitsu forum on Yahoo.": Will make it a point to check it out.

I'm a lifelong student. Always into something, especially if it is Victorian.

I wonder when Batman first started asian martial arts IN PRINT. Was that hold he used in 1939 a jiu-jitsu hold, or did the asian influence stem from the sixties?

Hi, VB --
"Was that hold he used in 1939 a jiu-jitsu hold, ...": I know the throw you're refering to -- it sure looks like a jiu-jitsu move.
"... or did the asian influence stem from the sixties": I think the explicit references to his study and mastery of Asian martial arts begin in the 60's -- Denny O'Neil certainly raised the bar pretty high that way.

Jiu-jitsu was a craze in this country around 1905. One still sees cultural references, like Porky Pig studying a JJ book while portraying Mr. Moto. Cagny studied it, I understand, and Teddy Roosevelt got a black belt in the White House.
